Coast to Coast - From Sea to Shining Sea - An epic multi-state rail adventure beckons for those with a desire to experience America’s cinematic landscapes and breathtaking diversity.
This coast to coast journey is nothing short of spectacular, covering thousands of miles and encompassing a host of unforgettable attractions between the vibrant east coast city of New York and the cosmopolitan delights of San Francisco on the shores of the Pacifi c, including Washington DC, Chicago, the Grand Canyon and Hollywood. The great railways which so embodied the pioneer spirit are still the most romantic and comfortable way to make your way across the USA ‘from sea to shining sea’.
Day 1 - London - New York
The holiday begins at London Heathrow Airport and your direct scheduled flight to New York. On arrival you transfer to the Radisson Martinique.
Day 2 - New York
This morning you have arranged a sightseeing tour of New York to acquaint you with this most fascinating and exciting city. You highlight many of the famous sights in Manhattan from the Empire State Building to Chinatown and Battery Park from where you observe the Statue of Liberty. This afternoon is free to explore.
Day 3 New York, Washington D.C.
You say goodbye to New York this morning as you board Amtrak’s Acela Express to Washington D.C. On arrival you take a city tour before you transfer to the hotel the Holiday Inn Central or Hilton.
Day 4 Washington D.C.
Today you are free to explore Washington’s inexhaustible treasures.
Day 5 Washington D.C., Amtrak Train
You transfer to Union Street Station where you board the Amtrak Capitol Limited train service for the overnight journey to Chicago. Your included evening meal will be served in the gracious dining car where the menu offers you a wide variety of meal selections.
Day 6 Amtrak Train, Chicago
After the included breakfast this morning, you arrive in Chicago and take a tour of this magnificent city built around Lake Michigan. You transfer to the hotel for the next two nights, the Essex Inn.
Day 7 Chicago
Like New York and Washington, Chicago is a city designed for walkers and today you are free to explore the 'Windy City'.
Day 8 Chicago, Amtrak Train
Today you board the California Zephyr for the overnight train journey to Denver.
Day 9 Amtrak Train, Denver
You arrive in Denver this morning and take a brief orientation tour of the ‘Mile High City’ passing by the State Capitol Building with its gold dome and where one of its steps is exactly one mile above sea level. You transfer to the hotel, the Crowne Plaza for the next two nights.
Day 10 Rocky Mountain National Park
Today you take a comprehensive tour of the Rocky Mountain National Park. After witnessing such stunning scenery, you return to the hotel this evening.
Day 11 Denver, Grand Junction
This morning you journey west to Georgetown where you take the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. You continue to Grand Junction and the hotel, the Grand Vista.
Day 12 Grand Junction, Durango
You depart Grand Junction this morning passing through stunning views of valleys and canyons and travel towards Silverton to catch the historic Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. You follow the route of the original Denver and Rio Grande Railroad on this coal-fired, steam powered locomotive before arriving in Durango and the hotel, the Holiday Inn.
Day 13 Durango, Flagstaff
You leave Durango this morning for Monument Valley to view these striking Monoliths. Synonymous with the image of the old Wild West, Monument Valley has been the backdrop to so many of the most famous westerns over the years. Later today you travel to Flagstaff and the hotel, Radisson Woodlands Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott or the Little America Hotel.
Day 14 Grand Canyon
Today you are at leisure to enjoy the stunning surroundings and you will find historic sights, places to eat and shop and of course some breathtaking views. You may wish to take an optional helicopter or fixed wing flight and experience the views from above.
Day 15 Flagstaff, Amtrak Train
You depart Flagstaff this morning and travel towards the beautiful red rock formations of Sedona. You take time here to explore before arriving back in Flagstaff for free time before you board the overnight Amtrak service, the Southwest Chief to Los Angeles.
Day 16 Hollywood
After the included breakfast onboard, you arrive at the historic Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and make the way to the movie capital of the world, Hollywood. Enjoy a sightseeing tour before arriving at the hotel, the Renaissance.
Day 17 Hollywood, San Francisco
You board the Coast Starlite this morning for the daytime journey to San Francisco before arriving in Oakland where the coach will transfer us west to fabulous San Francisco and the hotel the Holiday Inn Fisherman’s Wharf or Radisson.
Day 18 San Francisco
This morning you have arranged a tour of this remarkably compact city taking in views of the magnificent span of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Day 19 San Francisco
Today you are free to explore all San Francisco has to offer.
Day 20 San Francisco, London
You depart for San Francisco Airport and the direct scheduled Virgin Atlantic or British Airways flight to London Heathrow Airport.
Day 21 London
Arrival at London Heathrow Airport where the staff will greet you and transfer you to transport for your journey home to your own front door.

The Capitol Limited takes us 764 miles (1,230km) from Washington, DC to Chicago. You begin at Washington's beautifully restored Union Station and as you leave the city you catch glimpses of landmarks such as the blue and gold dome of the largest Catholic cathedral in the US. The train soon enters the state of Maryland and you begin the climb through the Appalachians, which offers us wonderful views of the Allegheny Mountains along the way.
The California Zephyr runs from Chicago in the east to Emeryville, California in the west. During the overnight sleeper journey on the California Zephyr as part of the USA Coast to Coast holiday, you travel on just a section of this route - from Chicago to the 'mile high' city of Denver, a 17 hour 1,038 mile (1670 km) trip.
The Southwest Chief stretches 2,256 miles (3,631km) from Chicago to Los Angeles, taking passengers on a historic route well-trodden by American Indians, Spanish conquistadors and fur trappers.
The Coast Starlight runs on the 1,390-mile (2,237km) route from Los Angeles to Seattle, taking its passengers along the shores of the Pacific Ocean, through lush, green valleys and impressive mountain ranges. On the USA Coast to Coast holiday you travel just a short section of this journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
Affinia Chicago, Chicago: The Affinia Chicago enjoys a fantastic location within walking distance of Navy Pier, the shops of the Magnificent Mile and the lake. The hotel has a restaurant and a rooftop lounge bar and terrace offering a selection of light snacks, cocktails and wonderful views over Chicago. The spacious rooms feature contemporary furnishings as well as a telephone, television, a CD stereo clock radio, coffee maker, fridge and a hairdryer.
Warwick Hotel, Denver: The Warwick Hotel is situated in the heart of Denver's Uptown neighbourhood close to the city's shops, restaurants and the Colorado State Capitol. The hotel has a restaurant serving contemporary American cuisine, a bar offering drinks and light snacks, a gift shop, fitness centre and a year-round heated rooftop swimming pool. The spacious, well appointed rooms have television, tea and coffee making facilities and a safe. Some rooms have a private balcony.
Doubletree Hotel, Durango: The Doubletree Inn, Durango, overlooks the scenic Animas River and is within walking distance of the town's shops and restaurants. Facilities include an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, fitness centre and a restaurant and lounge. Rooms feature a television, air conditioning, and hairdryer.
Little America Hotel, Flagstaff: The Little America hotel is situated within a 500 acre forest making this hotel the ideal place to sit back and relax. Hotel facilities include fitness centre, hot tub, outdoor swimming pool, restaurant and lounge/bar. In room amenities include tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer and television.
Hampton Inn, Grand Junction: Situated on historic Main Street in downtown Grand Junction, the hotel enjoys a prime location within easy walking distance of 150 shops, restaurants, museum and theatres. Phoenix Park Hotel, Washington DC: The Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington is situated on Capitol Hill, close to Union Station, the offices of the US Congress and many of the city's most famous attractions. The hotel has a unique Irish ambience and is home to the Dubliner Restaurant and Pub, which offers in-house brewed Irish spirit and live Irish entertainment.
