The only thing better than experiencing fall colours in one country is experiencing them in two! Treat yourself to an autumn holiday to Montreal, Quebec City and Vermont. Your trip begins in New York City, where you will board a vintage rail car for the journey into Canada, where you will spend 4 nights in the province of Quebec. Re-enter the States and enjoy visits to Burlington, the Green Mountains, Stowe and Lake Champlain within Vermont.
Day 1 – Montreal Limited to Montreal
Your autumn holiday begins at New York’s Penn Station this morning, where you will board the Montreal Limited. Sit back and enjoy the abundance of beautiful fall scenery as you travel through the Hudson River Valley and across the Adirondacks as the train makes its way to Montreal, Quebec. As the train skirts Lake Champlain, indulge in afternoon tea and reflect on what promises to be an amazing trip. Overnight Le Westin Montreal Hotel. (CB, L, AT)
Day 2 – Montreal Sightseeing
Embark on a sightseeing tour of the largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris. Highlights of your tour include Mount Royal, the chic Westmount area and St. Laurent. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure where you can shop along Sherbrooke Street or explore the Old Port. This evening there will be a special welcome dinner for the group. Day 3 – Montreal at Your Leisure
The entire day is yours to see and do what you like within this magnificent city. You may elect to do some shopping, enjoy one of the city’s lovely cafes, or revisit some of the stops from yesterday’s tour. Or, you may wish to take a day trip to nearby Ottawa. A short rail trip away, Ottawa is Canada’s capital city and is filled with amazing sights including Rideau Hall, Parliament Hill, and the National Art Gallery. Overnight Le Westin Montreal Hotel. (L)
Day 4 – Quebec City
This morning board a VIA Rail train for the scenic journey east to the province’s capital, Quebec City. Enjoy a comprehensive sightseeing tour including Montmorency Falls, the Citadel and the Old Town. The evening is free to enjoy one of the city’s delightful restaurants on your own. Day 5 – Burlington, Vermont
We depart Quebec City this morning bound for lovely Burlington, Vermont, a short scenic drive through the countryside with a stop for shopping and lunch on your own. Arrive at the Sheraton Burlington at around 4:30 pm. Later tonight, we'll make a special trip to The Essex for dinner at the four-diamond culinary resort proudly featuring farm-to-table options with a focus on local ingredients. (B, D)
Day 6 – Green Mountains / Stowe
This morning we are joined by a local guide for a wonderful day of touring. A special treat is a visit to the famous Von Trapp family home, immortalized in "The Sound of Music." Enjoy a historical tour of the home from one of the Von Trapp family members. You'll want to have your camera handy! Afterward, there will be free time to explore, shop and enjoy lunch on your own in nearby Stowe. What would a trip to Vermont be without a visit to an authentic Cider Mill? Certainly it should not be missed! But before our return to the hotel, we will also make a stop to the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory for a special treat. (B, AT)
Day 7 – Lake Champlain
Once again, our local guide will join us for another wonderful day of sightseeing. On the list: a visit to the Lake Champlain Chocolate Factory, the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory and the Shelburne Museum, considered one of the finest and most diverse museums of art, design and Americana with over 15,000 works on display in 39 exhibition buildings. There will be plenty of time for lunch on your own at the venue.
This afternoon, enjoy a rare and special opportunity to visit a local vineyard. An award-winning winemaker is our host and will introduce us to the robust flavors and the lovely setting during the first harvest of the fall. Return to the hotel to freshen up before our special Farewell Dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of Ethan Allen III. Overnight. Burlington Brights Sheraton. (B, D)
Day 8 – Farewell, Vermont
Your tour comes to a close after breakfast. You will be transferred to the rail station in Essex, VT, where you will board Amtrak’s Vermonter for the journey to nearby Connecticut, New York, or Washington, DC—all lovely locations where you may wish to continue your holiday or return home.
