Day 1 - Toronto, Canada’s Largest City
Arrive in Toronto today and transfer by shuttle bus from the airport to your hotel. Located in the centre of the city, you are minutes away from some of Toronto’s most famous sights. You have the entire at your leisure to explore the city. You may wish to browse Toronto’s unique shops or enjoy some of the city’s wonderful restaurants. Overnight Fairmont Royal York.
Day 2 - Toronto Sightseeing and Departure for Jasper
TEmbark on a Hop On/Hop Off sightseeing tour of Toronto, taking you to 20 stops on a 12-mile route through the city centre and showcasing some of the city’s most impressive landmarks. Take time today to do some shopping as well as indulge in some of Toronto’s gastronomic treats before you embark on your rail journey across Canada this evening. Your first-class experience begins with priority check-in at Toronto’s Union Station, conveniently located across the street from your hotel. Once onboard the Canadian, settle in to your accommodations complete with a comfortable sitting room by day that converts to upper and lower berths at night and prepare for your 22:00 departure. Day 3 - VIA Rail Toronto to Jasper
Make time today to explore the train’s many unique features and amenities. Seek out the Skyline Car, featuring an observation dome offering 360-degree views, and the Park Car with three different salons and an upper observation deck. Both cars offer impressive views of the passing winter scenes and are a wonderful place to meet your fellow travellers. Overnight train. (B, L, D)
Day 4 - VIA RAIL Toronto to Jasper
This morning the Canadian pulls into Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. Winnipeg was originally the hub of the Canadian fur trade due to its location near the intersection of three major rivers. Today, this area is known as The Forks and is the downtown location for some of Winnipeg’s exclusive restaurants and shops. You will have a couple hours to disembark the train in Winnipeg and explore the downtown area for a couple hours before the Canadian continues its journey west at noon.
This afternoon the Canadian crosses the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, signalling the mid-point of your rail journey. The first important town you will come across is Melville, named after Charles Melville Hays, President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad Company who died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Spend the day chatting with your fellow travellers and enjoying exclusive access to first-class lounges, dining on superb meals, and delighting in impeccable service. Overnight train. (B, L, D)
Day 5 - Arrive in Jasper
When you awake this morning the train will be approaching Edmonton, Alberta’s capital city that was integral in the Yukon gold rush and the Alberta oil discoveries. Make the most of your last full day on the train, admiring the snow-laden scenery, mountain towns, and dense forests from your private room or from one of the Canadian’s observation decks.
The train pulls into Jasper at 13:00. Located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, it is a wildlife sanctuary known for its looming mountaintops and floating icefields. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge staff will meet you at the rail station and escort you to your grand hotel offering luxurious accommodations in a spectacular mountain setting. Day 6 - Jasper National Park
Today is entirely at your leisure to enjoy Jasper. Take advantage of the many amenities available through your hotel, or venture out and skate on Lac Beauvert, cross-country ski, or take a winter hike on snow shoes. Overnight Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.
Day 7 - Jasper at Leisure
Today brings another full day at leisure. You may wish to embark on a guided excursion to Maligne Canyon to see rivers and waterfalls frozen in time - a spectacular sight not to be missed! Overnight Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.
Day 8 - Jasper to Vancouver
The morning is yours to revisit some of your favorite sights, or embark on a short new adventure. Transfer to Jasper’s train station this afternoon, where you will board VIA Rail’s Canadian for a 14:30 departure bound for Vancouver. Late this afternoon, the train passes Mt. Robson and slips into British Columbia. Overnight train. (D)
Day 9 - Arrival in Vancouver
Arrive in Vancouver just after 9:30 this morning. Transfer on your own to your hotel—a short taxi ride away—and after settling into your centrally-located hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to explore coastal city. You won’t want to miss Vancouver’s most popular attractions including Gastown, a 19th century neighborhood with cobbled streets and unique restaurants; Stanley Park and the famed Vancouver Aquarium; or, the Sunken Gardens in Queen Elizabeth Park. Day 10 - Vancouver
Your winter rail holiday comes to an end this morning. You may wish to extend your stay in Vancouver to fully explore the city and all of its incredible sights or continue your holiday with a jaunt to Victoria or the winter wonderland of Whistler. (B)
