Cardinal - Unforgettable views of the Southeast's stunning natural beauty.

Amtrak Logo

Cardinal

The Cardinal operates between New York and Chicago three days a week, offering unforgettable views of the Southeast's stunning natural beauty. You'll see gently rolling horse country, the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and the wild white-water rivers of West Virginia as they can only be seen by train. Heading westward, the train rolls along the banks of the mighty Ohio River—from the quaint towns of Ashland and Maysville, to the skyline of Cincinnati. From there, your journey continues to Indianapolis, and then northward to Chicago.

Amenities

Meals

All meals on the train for roomette and cabin passengers are included in the price. Full-course meals, snacks, cold drinks and alcoholic beverages are always available for additional purchase. The meals on board are generally of a high quality. Significantly better than airline food and the view is incomparable! The tables are set with linen and china and metal – not plastic – cutlery.

Dining Car

Most of Amtrak's long-distance trains include a full-service Dining Car, which serves hot meals prepared onboard by trained chefs for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

  • All meals for First class passengers, passengers with sleeping accommodations, and all Auto Train passengers (no matter which class you're traveling) are included in the price of their train ticket.
  • Coach class passengers may dine for an additional charge.Hours of operation of food service cars vary depending on train operation.

Lunch and Dinner Reservations

On long-distance trips, passengers are asked to make reservations for lunch and dinner. Reservations are taken in 15-minute increments, which allows for a more pleasant dining experience, assures passengers of receiving quality service from Amtrak staff and prevents the Dining Cars from becoming overcrowded during peak meal times.

After boarding, an Amtrak staff member will go through the train asking passengers to select a preferred time for dining. Lunch reservations are taken from 11:30 am - 3 pm; dinner reservations are taken from 5 pm - 9 pm.
