Featuring a look at three of Italy’s best-known travel destinations - Rome, Florence and Sorrento - this guided journey offers so much more than just sightseeing. Begin your Italian adventure in the ancient city of Rome, where sites such as the Colosseum, the Vatican, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain wait to be explored. From Rome, a high-speed train takes us to Florence - a place where famed sites meet new experiences. Here, enjoy tastes of Renaissance art, medieval architecture and, of course, wine. A high-speed train takes us from Florence, this time bound for Sorrento. As if the scenery thus far has not been amazing enough, you will be delighted by a trip down the Amalfi Coast and be astounded by your guided visit to the ancient city of Pompeii. Day 1 - Arrive in Rome
Welcome to Italy! Arrive at the airport and transfer to the hotel (normal check-in times apply). Included transfer will accommodate flights arriving into Rome before 10:30 am. The rest of the day is yours to relax or begin exploring the city independently. This evening, meet back at the hotel for a welcome dinner with your Tour Manager and fellow travellers. Day 2 - Rome
After breakfast, we start our exploration of Italy with a guided tour through the centre of Rome enjoying some of the famous highlights- the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain. The deep history of the city can be felt as we make our way from site to site and only increases as we venture to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. At the Colosseum, you will be treated to a look inside the former home to Gladiators, and at the Roman Forum, the centuries-old ruins will amaze you. This evening you are free to explore the local restaurant scene or sites at leisure. Overnight Rome. (B)
Day 3 - Vatican City
A religious mecca that visitors from all over the world flock to, Vatican City and its sites are on our itinerary for today. We begin at the Vatican Museums, where we will marvel over ancient excavations, detailed marble sculptures, a fantastic array of religious artwork and even the beautiful architecture. From here, enjoy a look at the 15th century Sistine Chapel, which is impressive for a number of reasons, but most notably Michelangelo’s work on the ceiling. We will also tour St. Peter’s Basilica - another stunning example of Renaissance architecture. Overnight Rome. (B)
Day 4 - Train to Florence
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before transferring to the train station for a high-speed ride to Florence. The ride is less than 2 hours in length, thanks to this efficient transportation system. A local guide will greet us upon arrival at Florence’s Santa Maria Novella Train Station. From here we will embark on a tour featuring a look at some of the most famed attractions in the city, such as Piazza Santa Croce, Piazza della Signoria and the Duomo, Florence’s beautiful cathedral from the 1400s. Ready for another dose of Michelangelo’s masterpieces? You are in luck. This walking tour concludes with a visit to the Accademia Gallery where his “David” is on display. Tonight, you will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight Florence. (B, D)
Day 5 - San Gimignano & Tuscan Cooking Class
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and some free time in Florence. Visit one of the many gardens, check out one of the museums or gaze upon the Renaissance-period buildings that fill the city. This afternoon we will head to the ancient city of San Gimignano, which delights with cobblestone streets, medieval buildings and soaring towers. After a guided walking tour, we return to Florence, where we will enjoy a hands-on Tuscan cooking class. Our chef will guide us through the culinary preparation and creation, then we will feast on a traditional Italian dinner complete with wine pairings. Overnight Florence. (B, D)
Day 6 - Florence at Leisure
The day is yours to take on Florence and the surrounding region however you see fit. Perhaps you want to visit Piazzale Michelangelo which offers the very best views over the city; take in the Renaissance Art at the Uffizi Galleries; or just meander along the city’s winding streets stopping for an espresso or shopping at the famous leather market. If you want to venture out of the city, embark on a train ride to the medieval city of Siena, to Pisa to see if you too can get the perfect leaning tower picture or maybe even to the coastal area of Cinque Terre, where colourful homes accent the stunning views of the Italian Riviera. Your Tour Manger will be available throughout the day to assist with your plans. Overnight Florence. (B)
Day 7 - Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento
This morning we will board the high-speed train headed to the waterside city of Naples. From the train station, we will take a short drive to one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, Pompeii. Our expert guide will transport us back to Roman times as we walk along the stone streets and see what is left of ancient buildings. We will learn more about their complex water systems, food and everyday life as we move throughout the ruins. After an included lunch we will transfer to the charming seaside resort town of Sorrento. Our hotel for the next three nights is ideally located and features awe-inspiring views of the spectacular Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Overnight Sorrento. (B, L)
Day 8 - Amalfi Coast
Turquoise waters and colourful villages lie ahead on today’s excursion down one of the most impressive examples of Mediterranean beauty, the Amalfi Coast. We will begin with a short drive from Sorrento to Tordigliano. Take a quick glimpse at the water and the rugged cliffs that dramatically cascade into it before boarding a minivan bound for Positano. This city is known for its posh atmosphere, colourful cliffside homes, shop-lined narrow streets and stunning pebble beaches. From Positano, we will board a boat for an incredibly scenic journey to Amalfi. Upon arrival in Amalfi, there will be an orientation tour and the rest of the time is yours to meander along the streets, seeking out the best views and culture the town has to offer. Do not miss the mosaic facade of St. Andrew’s Cathedral as you explore. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of Amalfi’s many restaurants before we transfer back to Sorrento. Overnight Sorrento. (B)
Day 9 - Sorrento at Leisure
The final day of your Italian vacation leaves you to explore Sorrento, the coast line or wherever else you please. After breakfast, choose your own adventure! Maybe take some time to explore the city’s museums. Museum Correale features paintings, furniture and artefacts from as early as the 17th century, as well as beautiful views over the surrounding citrus groves and a terrace overlooking the water. Alternatively, take a tour of the Cathedral Sorrento or people watch in Piazza Tasso. If you feel like getting away for the day, take a short ferry ride to the island of Capri. Here, high-end shops and modern amenities meet unbelievable natural sites and grand, estate-like properties. This evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant to recap your marvellous time in Italy. Overnight Sorrento. (B, D)
Day 10 - End of Tour
Following breakfast this morning, your time in Italy comes to a close. Transfer to Naples International Airport for your return flight home. Included transfer will accommodate flights that depart Naples after 10:00 am. (B)
Train and Hotel Accommodations
Hotels include Hotel Romanico Palace (Rome), Hotel Cellai (Florence), and Hotel Hilton Sorrento Palace.
Frecciarossa accommodations will be in Premium Class. Premium Class features reclining leather seats, air-conditioned carriages, and a complimentary hot or cold beverage. Frecciarossa high-speed trains, operated by Trenitalia, travel at speeds up to 200 mph combining speed with deluxe comfort.
