Equally famous is the town associated with World War II and the Battle of Remagen, where in which, Allied American forces attempted to capture Ludendorff Bridge during the closing months of the war. The railroad bridge was one of the only remaining bridges across the Rhine to remain intact, as German forces failed to demolish it in time as they retreated towards central Germany and the capital of Berlin. Train and Hotel Accommodations
Hotel Pinger, Remagen
Conveniently situated close to the railway station in Remagen and just a short stroll from the town centre and the Rhine, the 3-Star Hotel Pinger is a real local institution - the Pinger family have been running hotels in the area since 1938. The hotel has traditional-style restaurant, coffee shop, bar and beer garden, lounge, a lift between floors and a sauna. All en suite rooms have a television and telephone.
The Drachenfelsbahn cog railway leading to the top of the Drachenfels opened in 1883 and was very popular, as it drastically reduced the time and effort taken to reach the summit. The line is just less than a mile long, and climbs 220 meters above sea level on its way to the peak. In 1960 the decision was made to replace the steam traction with diesels, and these engines are still in use today. The railway offers the fantastic sight of the Siebengebirge Hills, and one of the major attractions is the ruined castle, halfway up the 321-metre hill.
Tours begin on sleek Eurostar services departing from London's gloriously restored St Pancras International station. Travelling on high-speed lines in the UK and on the Continent, Eurostar speeds us through the Channel Tunnel to Lille, Paris or Brussels to meet our European connections.
